In memory of Edgar Vazquez

On October 14, 2017, I received a phone call from the local police department that my son was dead. My son Edgar was just 13 years old. It was just not possible that he was dead and that I would never be able to hold him again. He had stayed overnight with a friend. They were at the grandfather’s home, and there were no adults there. Edgar’s friend decided to go into the grandfather’s room and pick up a unsecured, unlocked gun. He picked up the gun and thought it was not loaded. He pointed the gun at my son in another adjoining room and pulled the trigger. My son died instantly.

Edgar was my youngest child and was the most loving and outgoing child of mine. He made friends with anyone he met. He is missed every day by everyone that knew him. Memories of his kind heart and huge smile keep us going each day.

The loss of Edgar has been very tragic. The sad part is the gun owner had no accountability for the loss of a life. Edgar had so many more years to live.

Reacting shows support for gun violence survivors.
