In Vermont, the vast majority of all gun deaths are suicides. In response to that sobering statistic, in 2023, the legislature enacted a comprehensive suicide prevention package that included requiring secure storage of firearms, a waiting period for firearm purchases, and strengthened its Extreme Risk law. Despite this progress, Vermont still has not taken on many of the more innovative policies that its neighbors have pioneered and is the only state that has never had a concealed carry permit requirement.
