New Mexico

At a Glance

New Mexico

New Mexico has made major strides in its gun policy in recent years, passing a background check requirement for all gun sales, an Extreme Risk law, a suite of domestic violence protections, and a child access prevention law. New Mexico has higher gun violence rates, including being one of the states with the highest gun suicide rates, than its laws might suggest, perhaps in part due to the recency of those enactments. The state can hope to see reductions in gun violence as its new laws’ impact come into view.
