    Louisiana experiences one of the highest rates of gun deaths and gun homicides in the country. Both New Orleans and Baton Rouge are routinely among the most dangerous cities nationwide and yet the state does not allow local officials to pass basic public safety protections. In 2018, Louisiana took the important step of enacting laws to protect survivors of intimate partner violence, helping to ensure that abusers convicted of domestic violence or subject to a restraining order could not possess firearms. But since that time, the Louisiana legislature has repeatedly attempted to weaken the state’s gun safety laws.
