Virginia Moms Demand Action, Everytown Congratulate Dr. Ralph Northam on Winning Democratic Gubernatorial Primary

6.13.2017

RICHMOND, Va. – The Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement today after Dr. Ralph Northam became the Democratic nominee for governor in the Commonwealth. In the primary election, Northam ran on a platform of gun safety, and he has stood with the gun safety community since the Virginia Tech mass shooting more than a decade ago.

During the primary campaign contest, gun safety was a prominent issue, with both candidates touting their gun violence prevention credentials. Virginia Moms Demand Action volunteers actively supported Northam during the primary campaign, attending nearly two dozen campaign events and knocking on doors in get-out-the-vote efforts.

STATEMENT FROM JENNIFER HERRERA, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER, VIRGINIA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“The Virginia chapter of Moms Demand Action is thrilled that gun sense champion Ralph Northam has won the Democratic primary. We have worked side-by-side with Dr. Northam for years in the statehouse – and we’re ready to roll up our sleeves to get him elected as the next governor of the Commonwealth because we know he’ll put gun safety first. Throughout his career in elected office, Dr. Northam’s actions and votes have been pivotal in ensuring our gun laws serve Virginia citizens and not the NRA.

“This was an incredible Democratic primary, in which both candidates supported gun safety — right in the backyard of the NRA. Now we move onto the general election, in which gun safety will be one of the defining issues. Make no mistake: The difference between Dr. Northam and and all of the Republican candidates vying for governor on gun safety could not be starker – and we will work tirelessly to make sure our fellow Virginians know that Ralph Northam stands with the vast majority of us who favor common-sense gun laws, while his general election opponent will bow to the gun lobby.”
