COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement after Gov. Kasich reiterated Thursday that he would veto any so-called “Stand Your Ground” legislation passed during the lame duck legislative session. Speaking after the mass shooting in Thousand Oaks, Calif., the governor also called again on Ohio lawmakers to pass Red Flag legislation that would empower family members and law enforcement officers to ask a court to temporarily restrict a person’s access to guns when there is evidence that he or she poses a threat to self or others.
HB 228, legislation that would make Ohio a “Stand Your Ground” state, among other sweeping rollbacks of Ohio public safety laws, is currently pending and could be considered during the state’s lame duck legislative session that begins next week.

“Gov. Kasich gets it: Gutting Ohio public safety laws would have serious public safety consequences. ‘Stand Your Ground’ would be a giant step backward for Ohio at a time when more and more of us want lawmakers to work together to make us safer.
Family members and law enforcement are often the first people to know when someone poses a risk to themself or to others, and it’s past time for our leaders to add Ohio to the growing list of states with Red Flag laws.”
