House Bill 233 Would Allow People to Carry Hidden, Loaded Handguns in Ohio Schools, College Campuses, Bars While Drinking Alcohol and Even on Private Property Where “No Guns Allowed” Signs Are Posted
Moms Demand Action Volunteers Testified Against HB 233 Earlier Today
COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today criticized the House Committee on Federalism and Interstate Relation’s vote advancing HB 233, which will now move to a floor vote tomorrow morning.
HB 233 would allow people to carry hidden, loaded handguns in schools and on college campuses, in bars while drinking alcohol and even on private property where “No Guns Allowed” signs are posted. More information on this bill is available here.
The Ohio Chapter of Moms Demand Action joined several other groups in testifying against HB 233, including the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, the Ohio Coalition of Battered Women, the Coalition Against Gun Violence, Ohioans for Safe Communities, the Association of Police Chiefs, the Ohio Manufacturers Association, the Council of Retail Merchants and the Ohio Restaurant Association.
STATEMENT FROM MAUREEN WASHOCK, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER WITH THE OHIO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“I’m disappointed by the House committee’s vote to advance HB 233, a radical gun lobby-backed bill that would trample on Ohioans’ private property rights by allowing people to carry hidden, loaded handguns on private property and in our most sensitive places, including elementary schools and college campuses. It’s disgraceful that this unprecedented legislation is being pushed through at the last minute by the gun lobby. We urge our legislators to stand up for public safety by stopping HB 233 tomorrow.”
