Ohio Moms Demand Action Criticize Governor John Kasich’s Signing of Dangerous Gun Bill

12.19.2016

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today released the following statement criticizing Governor John Kasich’s signing of Senate Bill 199, a dangerous gun bill that allows people to legally carry hidden, loaded handguns in daycare centers and on some college and university campuses, as well as limits the ability of businesses to keep people from carrying guns on private property. The bill faced concerns from the Ohio State University president Michael Drake, law enforcement officers, business leaders, volunteers with the Ohio chapter of Moms Demand Action and college students, who testified against the bill during the final days of session. A group of campus shooting survivors and family members of victims from around the country also penned a letter to the Ohio legislature urging lawmakers to reject this proposal.

STATEMENT FROM MICHELE MUELLER, VOLUNTEER CHAPTER LEADER FOR THE OHIO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Governor Kasich ignored the concerns of law enforcement, business leaders, gun violence survivors, moms, daycare providers, campus stakeholders and students. By signing Senate Bill 199, Governor Kasich is siding with gun lobby interests over public safety.

“Going forward, we know it’s critical to work with our allies in Ohio to educate daycare centers and college campuses about what it means for them and steps they can take to keep their communities safe.”
