New York Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Passage of Gun Violence Prevention Legislation

1.29.2019

NEW YORK – Today the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following statement praising state lawmakers for passing a gun safety package. The legislation now heads to Governor Cuomo, who has indicated he will sign it.

“We are thrilled that this gun safety package received an early vote,” said Erin DaCosta, volunteer leader with the New York chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Seeing this life-saving legislation move forward gives me hope that strong leadership can result in real, common-sense solutions to address gun violence. Thank you to all of the legislators who worked to move this forward and Governor Cuomo for his leadership.”

The package includes the following:

  • Establishes a Red Flag law that allows for a court-issued extreme risk protection order (ERPO), which temporarily restricts a person’s access to firearms when they pose a significant risk of harming themselves or others. More information about Red Flag laws is available here.
  • Prohibits arming teachers and other school staff in K-12 schools.
  • Establishes an extension of time of up to 30 calendar days to allow for the completion of a national instant criminal background check before any gun is sold. This bill would close what’s commonly known as the Charleston Loophole.
  • Prohibits the possession, manufacture, transport and sale of rapid-fire modification devices, including bump stocks, that allow semi-automatic firearms to mimic the firing rates of machine guns.
