SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the Senate for passing SB 8, legislation that would require criminal background checks on all gun sales in the state. Similar legislation, HB 8, was passed by the House last week.
Federal law requires licensed gun dealers to conduct criminal background checks on gun sales, but a loophole exists that allows unlicensed sales, including sales online and at gun shows, to take place without background checks. Twenty states have passed laws to close this loophole for the sale of handguns, but New Mexico has yet to take action.
“With today’s vote, we’re one step closer to a New Mexico where families are safe from gun violence,” said Emilie De Angelis, volunteer leader with the New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “I’m grateful to Sen. Martinez and all members of the Senate who have shown their commitment to gun safety by continuing to fight for this life-saving legislation.”
