New Digital Ads Slam Wesley Hunt for Failing to Address Gun Violence and Putting Texans’  Health Care at Risk

Gun Violence Prevention is One of The Most Persuasive Attacks On Republicans in Texas’ Political Battlegrounds, Polling Shows

AUSTIN, Texas — Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund (“Everytown Victory Fund”) unveiled a new digital ad against Wesley Hunt, targeted to voters in Texas’ 7th congressional district. Everytown Victory Fund will be spending $200,000 to run the ads on digital platforms in Texas’ 7th district starting today until the election.

The ad slams Wesley Hunt for his failure to support background checks on all gun sales, and his support for a health care plan that would harm people with pre-existing conditions.

“Rep. Lizzie Fletcher’s victory in 2018 proved that a candidate can run on gun safety and win in Texas” said Charlie Kelly, senior advisor to Everytown for Gun Safety Victory Fund. “We’re getting out the message that Wesley Hunt won’t do what it takes to protect the health and safety of Texans.”

“Wesley Hunt has no plan to address the gun violence crisis in our state, even though more than 3,200 Texans are shot and killed every year,” said Gaby Diaz, volunteer with the Texas chapter of Moms Demand Action. “We stand with Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, who has prioritized the fight to prevent gun violence, and we’ll fight to keep her in Washington.”

Rep. Lizzie Fletcher is a gun sense candidate who has championed gun safety in the U.S. House. Fletcher has been endorsed by Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and has earned the Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate Distinction.

Polling conducted by Schoen Consulting of voters in the Dallas and Houston areas affirms that gun safety is a winning issue for battleground voters. Highlights include:

  • 76% of voters in Houston-area battleground districts say a candidate’s position on gun violence prevention is important to their vote.
  • Gun violence prevention is one of the most persuasive attacks on Republicans in battleground districts; messaging about Republican legislators standing in the way of gun safety rank on par with hits focused on other core issues such as cutting education funding and failing to protect people with pre-existing conditions.
  • Broad majorities of voters in Houston-area battleground districts support background checks on all gun sales, red flag laws, and disarming domestic abusers.
