Nevada Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Governor Sandoval for Signing Bill That Will Ensure Convicted Domestic Abusers Relinquish Their Guns When They Become Prohibited From Having Them

6.9.2017

LAS VEGAS – The Nevada chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded Governor Sandoval for signing Senate Bill 124, legislation introduced by Senators Pat Spearman, Julia Ratti, Aaron Ford, Joyce Woodhouse and Kelvin Atkinson that will require convicted domestic abusers to surrender their firearms once they become prohibited from having them. Although current law prohibits convicted abusers from purchasing and possessing guns, it does not require that convicted abusers turn in the guns they already own. SB 124 will also prohibit gun possession by people convicted of domestic violence stalking.

STATEMENT FROM ALICE GORDEZKY, A VOLUNTEER WITH THE NEVADA CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Today, we applaud Governor Sandoval for signing Senate Bill 124 into law. This legislation will help protect women and children by taking the necessary steps to ensure domestic abusers do not have access to guns. The importance of keeping guns away from domestic abusers cannot be overestimated. The reality is that more than half of the women shot to death in our country are killed by domestic abusers. And the presence of a gun in a domestic violence situation makes it five times more likely a woman will be killed. We’re proud of the gun sense champions in the legislature who supported this bill and Governor Sandoval for signing it into law. Enacting Senate Bill 124 is taking real action to reduce domestic gun violence in Nevada.”
