NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown, today applauded Facebook’s decision to stop showing minors ads promoting gun accessories. Facebook announced that advertisers promoting products like gun cases and paint, holsters and belt accessories, and gun-mounted flashlights and scopes will have to restrict their audience to adults aged 18 and older starting on June 21.
This decision follows Facebook’s decision in 2016 to prohibit unlicensed gun sales on all of its platforms. In 2014, Facebook took its first steps to crack down on illegal gun sales on its platforms in response to a campaign led by Moms Demand Action.
STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“I’m encouraged to see Facebook make yet another policy change that encourages and promotes gun safety on its platforms. This is an important step and one more signal that American companies are ready and willing to stand on the right side of history. Tech giants like Facebook play an important role in the fight for a safer nation and we’re grateful that its leaders are once again stepping up to the plate.”
