Hirschauer Joins Dozens of Moms Demand Action Volunteers Elected to Public Office Since its Founding in 2012
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and the Illinois chapter of Moms Demand Action, a part of Everytown, released the following statements applauding Maura Hirschauer for winning her race for State House.
“Over the past eight years, Moms Demand Action volunteers have become a force to be reckoned with. From school boards to statehouses to the halls of Congress, they’ve shown they’ll do whatever it takes to keep their families and communities safe from gun violence,” said Shannon Watts, founder of Moms Demand Action. “By showing up day-in and day-out to do the heavy lifting of grassroots activism, our volunteers are ready to move from shaping policy to writing policy. I’m so proud of Maura for winning her race today, and I know that as a lawmaker, she will be the ultimate gun sense champion.”
“Everytown is incredibly proud of the latest class of Moms Demand Action volunteers to get elected, who already know a thing or two about standing up to special interests and pushing through common-sense laws to keep their communities safe,” said John Feinblatt, president of Everytown for Gun Safety. “Everytown congratulates Maura on her big win, and we look forward to working with her to pass life-saving gun safety laws.”
Since 2017, over 100 Moms Demand Action volunteer leaders have run for elected office and dozens have won seats – from town council and school board to U.S. Congress. Earlier this year, Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund and Moms Demand Action endorsed 51 candidates.
The coronavirus pandemic has not stopped gun violence. Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action volunteers are committed to continuing to advocate for gun violence prevention amid both public health crises. Moms Demand Action volunteers know that gun violence kills more than 100 Americans every day and wounds 200 more – and they ran for office to enact change and stand up to the gun lobby’s priorities.
