Kelly Ayotte: Dodging her constituents and the gun violence issue
9.12.2016
Last week, Senator Kelly Ayotte kicked out a Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America volunteer from an event advertised as public.
But here’s a news flash: Ayotte’s constituents will Kick Out Kelly in eight weeks because she has refused to support the single best policy to help save lives from gun violence: an expansion of criminal background checks.
The gun violence issue is taking center stage in the New Hampshire Senate race between Ayotte and Gov. Maggie Hassan because Ayotte’s constituents — including the New Hampshire chapter of Moms Demand Action — are calling for common-sense measures to help save lives and demanding an elected leader who will prioritize that.
Moms Demand Action volunteers and gun violence survivors have not forgotten that Ayotte has consistently voted against an expansion of criminal background checks since the shooting at Sandy Hook killed 20 children and six educators.
In recent weeks, Ayotte has tried to portray herself as a champion of gun safety, but her record tells a different story. Time and again, Ayotte has sided with the gun lobby against the 80 percent of Granite Staters who support criminal background checks for all gun sales.
Here’s the truth: Ayotte can run from her record, but she cannot hide from the growing number of Granite Staters who will vote to Kick Out Kelly this November because of extreme positions against gun safety.
Moms and survivors will oust Ayotte and instead elect Hassan, a gun safety champion who has stood with her constituents.
