Kansas Moms Demand Action, Everytown Applaud Introduction of Bill to Keep Guns Out of the Hands of Domestic Abusers in Kansas House

3.22.2019

TOPEKA, Kan. – The Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today issued the following response after the introduction of HB 2406, legislation that would help protect women and families from domestic violence armed with a gun.

“We’re thrilled to see this legislation introduced today,” said Jo Ella Hoye, volunteer with the Kansas chapter of Moms Demand Action. “Lawmakers took a big step last session, but until we’ve done everything possible to disarm domestic abusers, our work is not finished. We’re ready to close the loopholes in our state’s gun laws and this bill shows our lawmakers are willing to do the same.”

In 2018, a bipartisan group of lawmakers worked together to enact a common-sense law that prohibits most domestic abusers from having firearms. But without a related enforcement mechanism requiring prohibited abusers to turn in the guns they may already have, women and families in Kansas remain threatened by abusers with guns.

HB 2406 would help better enforce the current law by requiring prohibited abusers to turn in their guns to law enforcement or to a licensed gun dealer for as long as they are prohibited from possessing them, closing a dangerous loophole and protecting survivors of domestic violence.
