Iowa Starting Line: ‘Students Demand Action Mobilizes In Iowa To Register Young Voters’

4.20.2020

Last week, Students Demand Action, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund, announced the launch of its Iowa Virtual Field Office, part of a $1.5 million effort by Everytown and Students Demand Action to register 100,000 young voters across the country ahead of the 2020 election.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues, gun violence of all types has not stopped, and neither have efforts to end gun violence. Students Demand Action volunteers are committed to registering young voters, starting with virtual voter registration as we continue to practice social distancing.

Grace Johnson, a volunteer with the Iowa State University chapter of Students Demand Action spoke with the Iowa Starting Line about her work with the Iowa Virtual Field Office saying:

“We’re really seeing a lot of success and progress in mobilizing our new volunteers and getting new people,” Johnson said, as she works from her parents’ home in Clive
….
“We’re registering everyone to vote,” she said. “We’re supporting any candidate who supports common sense gun laws regardless of party because at the end of the day we realize that we all just want to keep our friends and family safe, no matter what party we align with.”

Gun violence prevention consistently ranks as a top issue for young voters, and in Iowa, a recent survey from Everytown found that voters in Iowa support stronger gun safety laws by a 3:1 margin and 75 percent of voters consider a candidate’s position on guns “very important” to their vote in 2020.
