BOISE, Idaho – The Idaho chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today denounced the Idaho House of Representatives’ passage of dangerous “Stand Your Ground” legislation and urged Governor Otter to veto the bill.
Stand Your Ground legislation is unnecessary in Idaho – a state that already recognizes the right to use force, including deadly force, in self-defense whenever it is reasonable under the circumstances. Research finds that in 21 states, Stand Your Ground laws are associated with a clear increase in homicides. Additionally, there is no evidence that Stand Your Ground laws deter crime.
SB 1313 would let people shoot to kill in public even if there is a clear and safe alternative. The bill omits essential safeguards in Idaho’s traditional self-defense doctrine that prevent the reckless use of force.
STATEMENT FROM KATE BRUSSE, A VOLUNTEER WITH THE IDAHO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:
“As a native Idahoan, yesterday’s vote in the House to pass dangerous ‘Stand Your Ground’ legislation and send it to the governor’s desk is disappointing. Once again, members of the legislature have voted against the best interests of their constituents by passing a bill that would threaten the safety of Idahoans. The passage of legislation like this that could put people’s lives in danger is appalling, especially in light of the tragic mass shooting in Parkland, just one month ago. With Stand Your Ground, human lives are taken forever. I urge Governor Otter to veto this reckless bill.”
