First Wave: Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund Announces Targeted Midterms Spending of Up to $10 Million in Four Priority States; Unveils Key Endorsements

9.17.2018

NEW YORK – Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund announced today a first wave of spending of up to $10 million and key endorsements to elect gun sense candidates in Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and New Mexico. Today’s announcement of initial electoral target states is just the start of spending activity and endorsements that will be unveiled over the coming weeks as Everytown ramps up its electoral engagement.

Support will include contributions to state candidates and independent expenditures funding mail, television, digital and radio advertisements. Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund has already spent more than $1.2 million this cycle in support of gun sense champion Lucy McBath, who is running for Congress in Georgia’s sixth district. Everytown previously endorsed McBath and the organization will continue to support her campaign.

STATEMENT FROM JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“The American people know gun safety isn’t a right-or-left issue — it’s a life-or-death issue that our leaders need to address immediately. Voters of all stripes want stronger gun laws — and Everytown is going to redraw the electoral map in November.”

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Across the country, Moms Demand Action volunteers are showing up for candidates who support gun safety. We’re registering voters, knocking doors and making calls to get people to the polls to vote for gun sense candidates in November. Make no mistake: a wave of gun sense candidates who support common-sense gun laws is coming.”

Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund today endorsed the following candidates:

  • Stacey Abrams, Democratic Candidate for Governor in Georgia
  • Gretchen Whitmer, Democratic Candidate for Governor in Michigan
  • Dana Nessel, Democratic Candidate for Attorney General in Michigan
  • Steve Sisolak, Democratic Candidate for Governor in Nevada
  • Aaron Ford, Democratic Candidate for Attorney General in Nevada
  • Michelle Lujan Grisham, Democratic Candidate for Governor in New Mexico

Since 2014, Everytown for Gun Safety has taken the fight for common-sense gun legislation state-by-state, in partnership with its grassroots arm Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. There has been significant progress in the states, defeating dangerous gun lobby legislation and passing common-sense gun laws that will help save lives. Since the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida, 18 states ― red, blue and purple ― have passed meaningful gun safety legislation. The selection of these candidates for endorsement emphasizes Everytown’s ongoing commitment to gun safety in states across the country.

Everytown will continue to endorse candidates and make independent expenditures this election cycle. Everytown previously endorsed 41 Moms Demand Action volunteers and gun violence survivors running for office, as well as incumbent Governors Kate Brown (OR), Andrew Cuomo (NY) and Gina Raimondo (RI).
