Everytown, New Mexico Moms Demand Action Applaud Senate Public Affairs Committee Passage of Legislation To Require Criminal Background Checks For All Gun Sales and Help Save Lives

1.31.2017

SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown for Gun Safety, today applauded the Senate Public Affairs Committee passage of Senate Bill 48, legislation to close the background check loophole in New Mexico and require criminal background checks for all gun sales.

Earlier today, volunteers with the New Mexico chapter of Moms Demand Action and gun violence survivors testified in support of Senate Bill 48.

STATEMENT FROM KAREN WATKINS, VOLUNTEER WITH THE NEW MEXICO CHAPTER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Today, I’m proud of our leaders in the Senate Public Affairs Committee for standing up for public safety and voting ‘yes’ on Senate Bill 48. Our current gun laws in New Mexico have a glaring loophole, making it easy for dangerous people to get their hands on a gun, which puts us all at risk. Our families and communities deserve a safe living environment and it’s simply unacceptable that felons and domestic abusers can buy guns from unlicensed sellers – including strangers they meet online and at gun shows – with no background check, no questions asked. SB 48 will help keep guns out of dangerous hands and as this important gun safety bill moves through the legislature, I hope our elected leaders in the statehouse remember they were elected into office to protect the safety of New Mexicans. This bill is about saving lives.”
