WASHINGTON – Today, Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, along with Giffords, the gun violence prevention organization founded by former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and Captain Mark Kelly, applauded the announcement of ‘March for Our Lives’ on March 24, 2018.

In the wake of the mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School – the deadliest school shooting since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook School in 2012 – students have banded together to descend on the streets of Washington, D.C. and around the country on March 24. They will demand that the lives of students are made a priority and that Congress pass common-sense gun safety legislation.

STATEMENT FROM FORMER REPRESENTATIVE GABRIELLE GIFFORDS, CO-FOUNDER OF GIFFORDS:

“No child should ever have to march in the streets to demand that their elected leaders take action to protect them – and yet, that’s exactly what’s happening America. The courageous students of Parkland stood before the nation and declared that now is the time to address America’s gun violence crisis. Not only are they calling for change, they’re organizing the nation to stand with them in this pursuit. We will do everything we can to support their effort and will stand by their side for every step of the march.”

STATEMENT FROM LUCY MCBATH, WHOSE SON, JORDAN DAVIS, WAS SHOT AND KILLED IN AN ARGUMENT OVER LOUD MUSIC AT A GAS STATION IN JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA. LUCY IS THE FAITH AND OUTREACH LEADER FOR EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY AND MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA:

“Earlier this week, I celebrated the 23rd birthday of my son Jordan who was shot and killed in Florida in 2012. The rampant guns everywhere, anytime, no questions asked culture gets us one thing: Our children shot and killed. I will fight alongside these students because our gun laws need to change and our nation’s students are ready to send that message loud and clear. It’s not too early, it’s too late. Let’s work together to make our children safer.”

STATEMENT FROM SHANNON WATTS, FOUNDER OF MOMS DEMAND ACTION FOR GUN SENSE IN AMERICA, PART OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“Congress remains complacent – and, ultimately, complicit – in the wake of tragedy. But, these students will send a clear message: How do you ignore children pleading for adults to keep them safe from gun violence? We applaud the announcement of ‘March for Our Lives’ later next month and look forward to doing whatever we can to support the efforts of these students as they lead their marches across the country. It’s unacceptable that our elected leaders continue to prioritize gun manufacturers’ profits over the safety of our children.”
