Everytown for Gun Safety Submits FOIA Requests for Communication Between NRA, DOJ Surrounding President Trump’s Nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court

7.12.2018

Judge Kavanaugh’s Judicial Record Demonstrates a Dangerous View of the Second Amendment that Elevates Gun Rights Above Public Safety

NRA Lauded Trump’s Nomination of Kavanaugh, Calling it “Outstanding” and Saying “Promises Made. Promises Kept.”

NEW YORK – Today, Everytown for Gun Safety Support Fund, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, sent Freedom of Information Act requests to the Department of Justice Office of the Attorney General, Office of the Deputy Attorney General, Office of Public Affairs and Office of Legal Policy requesting any records of communication between Justice Department employees and the NRA surrounding Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy’s upcoming retirement from the Supreme Court, Judge Brett Kavanaugh or President Donald Trump’s nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

STATEMENT FROM NICK SUPLINA, MANAGING DIRECTOR FOR LAW AND POLICY FOR EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“President Trump promised NRA leaders he would never let them down, and by nominating Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court he made good on that promise. Kavanaugh’s judicial record demonstrates a dangerous view of the Second Amendment that elevates gun rights above public safety. The American people deserve to know whether the NRA played a role in his selection.”
