Today, the Federal Commission on School Safety Hosts Its First of Several Public Listening Sessions

According to Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, The Commission Will Not Look at Guns

NEW YORK – Today Everytown for Gun Safety and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a part of Everytown, released the following statement as the Federal Commission on School Safety led by Education Secretary Betsy DeVos begins its first of several public listening sessions.

The listening session comes as reports indicate that yesterday during testimony before a Senate appropriations subcommittee, DeVos said that the commission, formed after the Parkland mass shooting earlier this year, would not examine guns as part of the commission’s charge.

The commission also includes three other cabinet secretaries: former NRA A+ rated Senator and current Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

STATEMENT BY JOHN FEINBLATT, PRESIDENT OF EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY:

“What we heard yesterday only confirms what we already knew: The Trump administration is far more concerned with securing NRA support than addressing the root causes of gun violence — namely, our lax gun laws.”
