Today, the Alabama Senate Tourism Committee Voted Not to Advance SB 4
71 Percent of Alabama Voters Oppose Removing the Requirement for a Permit to Carry Hidden, Loaded Handguns in Public
MONTGOMERY, Ala. — The Alabama chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, part of Everytown for Gun Safety, released the following response after the Alabama Senate Tourism Committee voted not to advance SB 4, a dangerous bill that would have allowed people to carry hidden, loaded handguns in public without getting a permit or passing a background check.
“We’re thrilled that our elected officials chose to listen to their constituents who urged them to reject this dangerous bill,” said Dana Ellis, volunteer with the Alabama chapter of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America. “Today’s vote was a major step toward gun sense in Alabama, and we applaud the members of the Senate who voted to protect the safety of our communities.”
Most Alabamans support the existing permit system. A recently released poll from Everytown for Gun Safety indicates that a staggering 71 percent of recent Alabama voters oppose removing the requirement for a permit, allowing people whom law enforcement has determined pose a public safety risk to carry concealed guns, and 62 percent of voters would be less likely to vote for Gov. Ivey if she signed legislation doing so.
