5.12.2015

ISLA VISTA, CA – Richard Martinez, father of 20-year-old UCSB shooting victim Christopher Ross Michaels-Martinez, released the following statement in response to last night’s shooting, which took place near the campus of UC Santa Barbara.

While details are still unfolding, reports indicate two UCSB students were injured during the incident, suffering moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital.

STATEMENT FROM RICHARD MARTINEZ, FATHER OF UCSB SHOOTING VICTIM AND SENIOR OUTREACH ASSOCIATE FOR EVERYTOWN FOR GUN SAFETY

“The shooting last night has once again traumatized the UCSB community nearly a year after the tragedy that killed my son Christopher and five others. It is the worst kind of reminder that gun violence can happen at any time and any place. This year, while I should be celebrating Christopher’s graduation from UCSB, I’ll be honoring his life, a life that was senselessly cut short. I’ve decided to not let Christopher’s death be in vain. I’ve decided to stand up for him and the 88 other Americans killed each day by gun violence. As a nation, we can work so that ‘Not One More’ person is killed by senseless gun violence in this country.”
